“Jazz Evenings in the Philharmonic Society”: Johnny O’Neal (piano, vocal)

The Belarusian State Philharmonic Society invites all the music admirers to the concert of an excellent jazz pianist and singer Johnny O’Neal (the USA) that will be held in the frames of the project “International Jazz in Minsk” on the 22nd of October.

A famous pianist whose concerts are always sold-out and who hears a great amount of enthusiastic responses after his performances will visit Belarus for the first time. But he won’t come empty-handed! At the beginning of Autumn Johnny O’Neal plans to release his new album so that music lovers from Minsk have a great opportunity both to be the first to enjoy the fresh music and buy a disc signed by a famous improviser.

Johnny O’Neal is famous for his unique performing manner where he unites unbelievable technical abilities and calm ballade melodies. Such jazz legends as Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum influenced him a lot. The pianist who is considered to be a neo-bop icon performed on one stage and has recordings with such stars as a guitarist Russel Malone and a trumpet-player Clark Terry.

Since 1981 he has lived in New-York where he works in a legendary club “Blue Note”. Here he accompanied to Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Nancy Wilson, Joe Pass and Kenny Burrell. Johnny O’Neal performed together with Art Blakey Jazz Messengers since 1982 till 1983 and in 1985 he debuted in Carnegie Hall – a place which can be called a “Mecca” for the musicians from all over the world.

By the recommendation of Oscar Peterson who took part in a filming of Oscar-winning “Ray” (2004), where he played a role of his idol and teacher – pianist Art Tatum.

Johnny O’Neal is 60 years old, but he still gives concerts all over the world. During his recent concert together with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis, he got a standing ovation.

In Minsk Johnny O’Neal will perform in a trio together with the stage partner of Tony Bennett, John Hendricks, Ne-Yo and Steve Nelson a demanded New-York drummer Charles Goold and famous New-York double-bass player, composer and bandleader Ark Ovrutski.

The concert is organized in the frames of the project “Jazz from New-York”. His main aim is to give the Belarusian public an opportunity to enjoy the improvisations from the world jazz capital in the center of Minsk in a marvelous Big Hall of the Belarusian State Philharmonic Society.
