The Honored Collective the State Chamber Choir of the Republic of Belarus was created in 1988 by an outstanding musician and a Choir conductor Igor Matukhov. From the very start the Choir attracted the attention of the musical community and achieved significant success. The Honored artist of the Republic of Belarus Natalia Mikhailova has been conducting the collective since 2000. High level of erudition and artistic culture, devotion to creativity allow to call Natalia Mikhailova as one of the brightest and the most important figures in present-day music of Belarus.
The main mission of the Choir’s creative activity was revival and popularization of early Belarusian and Russian sacred music, western European classical music and works of the Belarusian composers of all generations. The repertoire of the Choir also includes ancient Belarusian chants from the 14th-19th centuries, best scores of sacred and secular Russian music, including choral compositions by Bortniansky, Arkhangelsky, Chesnokov, Tchaikovsky, Taneev, Rachmaninov, as well as masterpieces of Western European vocal music (by Bach, Vivaldi, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Mozart).
In addition, the Choir presented to the public the concert performance of operas (Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci”, Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”, Mozart’s “Idomeneo” and others).
A lot of works by contemporary domestic composers (Victor Kopytko, Elena Atrashkevich, Andrey Bondarenko, Sergey Kortes, Vladimir Karizna, Vyacheslav Kuznetsov) and world athours (Penderecki, Hindemith, Messiaen, Yasinsky, Ešenvalds, Whitacre and others) has also been premiered by the Choir.
From the very start the outstanding quality of the performances of the Belarusian State Chamber Choir was acknowledged and lauded by the critics and public. The Choir performed a number of recitals in Norway, Poland, Denmark, Germany, Lithuania, Italy, Russia and many other countries. The Belarusian State Chamber Choir was the first to perform many musical masterpieces new to the Belarusian audience. But, still, the collective has remained true to its artistic principle, that is in popularization of national musical heritage and support of the modern Belarusian art. The Choir has worked with many prominent orchestras and conductors and was fortunate enough to perform with the best performers, the stars of the world stage: Krzysztof Penderecki (Poland), Goran Bregovic (vocal, Bosnia and Herzegovina), Leonid Chizhik (piano, Germany), Dmitri Hvorostovsky (Russia), Ira Spaulding (vocal, USA).
Also the collective participated in many reknown musical and Choir festivals in Poland, Slovakia, Sweden, Bulgaria, Belgium, Estonia, Ukraine, Italy, etc. and was granted a lot of prizes. For already 30 years the singers of the Belarusian State Chamber Choir do their best to let the audience enjoy the Choir’s artistry and look forward to new bright performances.
Under Mikhailova’s artistic supervision the repertoire of the Choir has been significantly enhanced, and, now, along with standard choral works, it also includes jazz compositions and spirituals as well as experimental projects: musical drama plays “Wait, the Sun!” and “Lonely Bird” by Oleg Zaletnev, musical parable “An apocryphal story” and the modern choral theater “Yakub Kolas Square” by Larisa Simakovich.
In 2008 for her high level of prowess Natalia Mikhailova was awarded with the Frantsysk Skaryna Medal, and five years later she was also granted the title of the Honored Artist of the Republic of Belarus.
